Types of Golf Course Grass

Golf courses cannot be separated from grass, even though they are peppered with holes, bunkers, trees, flowers, and lagoons. Golf clubs and golf courses in the world pay special attention to managing and maintaining the golf course grass, especially in the fields holding big and prestigious tournaments such as major tournament, PGA, ET, LPGA, and LET.

There are several types of grass used on golf courses adjusting to the availability of water, climate, and soil type. However, in general there are four types of grass most often used on golf courses in the world.

The first type is Bermuda Grass. This grass is often found in fields in warm temperate regions with low rainfall since this type of grass has the ability to adapt to heat and can thrive in high temperatures, such as dry and tropical regions. Nonetheless, it will be more difficult to grow and very quickly damaged if planted in cold climate countries. Another type of grass is Bent Grass which has better adaptability and endurance and good growth ability even with low water intensity. This grass can even be cut as short as possible and still provides a good texture even though golfers often use or trample on it without significant damage.

The last type is Zoysia Grass which can survive in hot and long dry climates but its growth tends to be slow. It’s very stiff texture is not able to survive if too often trampled on by golfers. It is not strange if it is more often used in tee box areas, fairways, and rough.
Several golf courses mostly use Rye Grass since it has a smooth texture easier to cut, even this type of grass is considered special for rough and fairway areas. Unfortunately, it is difficult to grow in a climate which is too hot and dies in the freezing point.
